In a truly heartwarming demonstration of global generosity spurred by social media, 88-year-old veteran Ed Bambas was recently surprised with an enormous check for more than $1.7 million, allowing him to finally retire from his job at a Michigan supermarket. Strangers from around the world donated the money after Bambas’s compelling story of working through his late 80s was shared in a viral social media video by Australian influencer Sam Weidenhofer.
The Heartbreaking Reason Behind a Full-Time Job
Ed Bambas, an Army veteran, had originally retired as a salaried employee from General Motors back in 1999. However, financial hardship forced him back into the workforce nearly a decade ago. His financial stability was devastated when GM filed for bankruptcy in 2012, resulting in the elimination of his pension. Salaried GM retirees receiving monthly payments were offered several options that year, including the continuation of lifetime payments or a lump sum payout, as the company aimed to cut its U.S. pension obligation. Bambas ultimately stopped receiving his monthly pension checks and opted for a $300,000 lump sum from the automaker.
Around the same time, Bambas’s wife, Joan, with whom he had been married for over 50 years, became gravely ill. He shared that when the company took his pension, they also removed his health care coverage and nearly all his life insurance, leaving him with mounting medical bills. The crushing financial blow meant he was “drowning in debt,” and he was forced to sell his home and property to “make it through”. After his wife died seven years ago, Ed had no choice but to return to work, taking on a grueling 40-hour workweek as a cashier at a Meijer grocery store.
A Chance Encounter That Flew 9,000 Miles
Australian social media influencer Sam Weidenhofer, known as a “positivity influencer,” was traveling through the U.S. on a Kindness Tour when he learned about Bambas. Weidenhofer first learned about the hardworking grandfather when a stranger commented with Bambas’s name, age, and workplace on one of his videos. Inspired by the story, Weidenhofer flew over 9,000 miles from Australia to meet the veteran.
Weidenhofer found Bambas working his shift at the Meijer store in Brighton, Michigan, on November 25. In a video that quickly went viral on TikTok, Weidenhofer approached Bambas, introduced himself, asked about his story, and initially surprised him with a $400 tip. During their conversation, Bambas revealed that his dream was simply to “Live a little, somewhat, of the life [he] was hoping for”. Weidenhofer, deeply moved by the veteran’s need to work at such an advanced age, told him, “I’d like to share your story and you know, get people to help you retire,” before launching an online GoFundMe campaign.
The Internet Rallies: A Historic Fundraiser
The response from internet donors was nothing short of overwhelming, proving that the power of social media could make a profound difference. Weidenhofer had previously stated that “No 88-year-old in America should have to work because they need to, and that breaks my heart,” adding that he just wanted to give Bambas a chance to retire and “have some comfort”.
The GoFundMe campaign rapidly gained momentum, generating more than $800,000 within its first day. By the time the surprise was executed, the fundraiser had accrued over $1.7 million, climbing past $1.806 million even after the official presentation. Weidenhofer later noted that the massive payout was one of the largest individual fundraisers in GoFundMe history. In total, over 15,000 people contributed to the cause, with donations ranging from $10 to $10,000.
The Emotional Reveal
On Friday, December 5, 2025, Bambas was surprised with the life-changing donation. The widowed senior had no idea how successful the fundraiser had been since its launch the previous Monday. Weidenhofer presented the Army veteran with an oversized check for $1.77 million at a private ceremony.
Bambas was visibly overcome with emotion, immediately breaking into tears upon seeing the amount. He wiped away tears and sniffles, sharing his disbelief.
“Thank you … oh my God,” Bambas said after the surprise. “I wish my wife were here, but it’s something that dreams are made out of, trust me, from my beginnings to here”.
The funds, which surpassed $1.77 million, were placed into a trust managed by Foguth Financial Group, helping Bambas manage his newfound wealth and pay off accumulated debts. While he plans to leave his cashier post soon, Bambas noted, “I’ll probably work another month or two and shut things down”. Thanks to the incredible kindness of strangers, the veteran who worked eight hours a day, five days a week, now has the chance to reestablish himself and finally “live a little” of the life he truly deserved.
