Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese cemented his place in the nation’s political history books on Saturday, November 29, 2025, by becoming the first serving Australian leader to get married. The landmark event saw the Prime Minister tie the knot with his partner of five years, Jodie Haydon.
The private, yet high-profile, ceremony was held on a Saturday afternoon at The Lodge, the Prime Minister’s official residence in the national capital, Canberra. The date was specifically chosen to follow the final sitting of the parliamentary year. In the 124-year history since the formation of Australia’s Federal government, Mr. Albanese is the first leader to marry while holding the highest office.
An Intimate and Top-Secret Affair
Due to understandable concerns regarding security and the potential for disruption, the wedding plans—including the specific date and location—were strictly kept “top secret” or “under wraps” until the event had taken place.
The ceremony, which was officiated by a civil celebrant from New South Wales’s Central Coast, was intimate, hosting approximately 60 distinguished guests.
Following the nuptials, the happy couple shared a joint statement reflecting their joy: “We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends,”.
Personal Touches and Celebrity Guests
The ceremony was filled with highly personalized elements that reflected the couple’s relationship.
Ms. Haydon was escorted down the aisle by her parents, Bill and Pauline Haydon, while the distinctive melody of Ben Folds’s “The Luckiest” played. The couple took the unique step of writing their own vows.
Perhaps the most memorable participant was the couple’s dog, Toto, who charmingly served as the ring bearer. Joining Toto in the wedding party was Ms. Haydon’s five-year-old niece, Ella, who participated as the flower girl.
After the ceremony was complete, the newlyweds walked back down the aisle to the classic hit, Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)”. The moment was captured and later shared on the Prime Minister’s official social media accounts, showing guests showering the happy pair in confetti.
The guest list included immediate family, such as the Prime Minister’s son, Nathan Albanese, from his previous marriage. Ms. Haydon’s brother, Patrick Haydon, and Mr. Albanese’s cousin, Helen Golden, acted as witnesses. Senior political figures were also in attendance, including Cabinet ministers Jim Chalmers, Penny Wong, Katy Gallagher, and Richard Marles, as well as actor Rhys Muldoon.
Fashion, Feast, and Future Plans
For the special occasion, Ms. Haydon wore a dress designed by the Sydney house Romance Was Born, while Mr. Albanese wore a suit from MJ Bale. Their wedding bands were sourced from Cerrone Jewellers in Leichhardt, Sydney. It has been confirmed that the couple covered all expenses related to the event privately.
The reception continued the personalized celebration. The couple shared their first dance to Frank Sinatra’s timeless song, “The Way You Look Tonight”. Guests were also treated to beer served in custom-made cans produced by Willie the Boatman, an Inner West Sydney brewery. These unique cans were printed with the image the couple had used to announce their engagement.
The joyous occasion garnered public congratulations, with Opposition Leader Sussan Ley offering her well wishes: “I wish them every happiness as they continue building their lives together,”.
The Road to the Altar
Mr. Albanese, 62, and Ms. Haydon, 47 (or 46), first met at a business dinner in Melbourne in 2020, back when Mr. Albanese was the leader of the opposition.
The Prime Minister had previously made Australian history by becoming the first prime minister to get engaged while in office. He proposed to Ms. Haydon on Valentine’s Day last year (2024), at The Lodge, following a dinner at the Canberra restaurant Italian and Sons. He shared the news the following day on social media with the simple caption, “She said yes”.
Ms. Haydon, who works in the finance sector, has been a consistent presence in his public life, featuring prominently in both his 2022 and 2025 election campaigns. She has also accompanied the Prime Minister to significant global affairs, including the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and a high-profile state dinner hosted by former US President Joe Biden at the White House in 2023. Ms. Haydon previously recounted that she realized her deep affection for the Labor leader after he was involved in a serious car accident in 2021.
Political Prudence and Future Home
Prior to the May election, the couple had initially planned a larger wedding celebration and had even considered inviting personal friend and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. However, strategists for the ruling Labor Party felt that a grand event amid the cost-of-living crisis could negatively impact public support for the government’s second term. Consequently, they postponed the wedding until after the election.
The couple is set to take a short honeymoon within Australia, running from Monday until Friday next week. Mr. Albanese also revealed that, had he not been reinstalled as prime minister following the May election (which Labor won with a thumping majority), they had initially planned for a more extended, two-month honeymoon. Those original plans were pared back after his re-election.
The marriage is Mr. Albanese’s second; his 19-year marriage to former NSW politician Carmel Tebbutt ended in 2019. He has one son, Nathan, from that previous relationship.
Looking to the future, the couple intends to relocate to a $4.3 million clifftop property in Copacabana on the Central Coast, where Ms. Haydon grew up. The Prime Minister noted that Ms. Haydon is a “proud coastie” and that “when your relationship changes, your life changes,” while affirming his commitment to serving a “very long” time in his current job.
The wedding celebration, held quietly and intimately at the nation’s official residence, symbolizes how even the highest public office can accommodate personal commitment, marking a distinctive and romantic chapter in Australian political history.
