In the quiet corridors of Kathmandu, a significant conversation recently unfolded—one that mirrors the hopes and anxieties of a generation. Miraj Dhungana, a vocal Gen Z activist, sat down with Kathmandu Mayor and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) figure Balen Shah to discuss the future of the country. This dialogue was not just a political meeting; it was an interrogation of the “new wave” of Nepali politics through the lens of those who will inherit its results.
The Quest for a Guarantee
At the heart of the discussion was a fundamental question: Can the youth trust that their demands will be met simply by winning an election? Dhungana questioned whether the country’s future should depend entirely on the RSP securing a majority. While Balen Shah emphasized that any agreement made now would lack legal standing without a formal mandate, Dhungana pushed for something more tangible.
In a moment of symbolic weight, Dhungana asked for a guarantee written on traditional Nepali paper—a promise that Gen Z issues would be addressed if they joined the RSP’s movement. Balen, however, remained steadfast in his belief that the only legitimate path forward is through the ballot box, arguing that partnering with the very forces they are protesting against would be counterproductive.
The Mathematics of Hope
The skepticism from the Gen Z side isn’t born of cynicism, but of practical concern. Dhungana pointed out that while the RSP secured 21 seats in the last election, reaching the 138 seats required for a majority is a monumental task. He expressed deep worry that if the “new forces” fail to secure a landslide, the issues championed by Gen Z will be left in limbo.
“With the possibility of major parties like the Congress and Communists forming alliances, the hope for a single-party majority feels distant,” Dhungana noted. He fears that leaving the country’s fate to a “low probability” outcome in the next election could be a historic mistake.
A Different Path Forward
Instead of waiting for an uncertain election result, Dhungana proposed a radical alternative: forming a “Citizen Government” through universal consensus to amend the constitution and provide a way out for the country before heading to the polls. He expressed a willingness to play any role necessary to facilitate this collective agreement.
However, the dialogue ended on a note of divergence. Balen Shah concluded the meeting by suggesting that both sides continue moving forward in their own ways.
