The ocean has a way of drawing us in with its rhythmic pulse and breathtaking vistas, but as one traveler recently discovered, its beauty can turn treacherous in a heartbeat. At the Matrouh Eye in Mersa Matruh, Egypt, a Chinese tourist’s quest for a memorable vacation photo nearly ended in tragedy when a massive wave swept her into the sea.
A Scenic Backdrop Turned Dangerous
Mersa Matruh is a destination beloved for its striking rock formations and the dramatic way the surf crashes against the shore. It was here, amidst the rugged cliffs, that a woman in a vibrant orange dress chose to pose for a photoshoot. She stood within a gap in the sea cliff, framed by the unusual stone architecture of the “Eye”.
While the location offers a stunning visual, the tides there are notoriously unpredictable. Without warning, the rising surf surged through the rock opening with the force of a firehose, knocking the woman from her perch and pulling her directly into the churning surf.
A Narrow Escape
The moments that followed were, in the victim’s own words, “very frightening”. As the water pulled her out toward the open sea, she managed to find a lifeline—a safety rope. She clung to the rope and fought her way back to the safety of the shore.
While she survived the ordeal, the power of the ocean left its mark; she suffered multiple abrasions across her body from being smashed against the jagged rocks. Interestingly, observers online noted that the safety rope she used to save her life had only been installed recently.
The Rising Cost of the “Perfect Shot”
This incident is far from isolated. Travelers are increasingly putting themselves at risk for the sake of social media, leading researchers to label selfie-related injuries at landmarks a “public health problem”. From the woman in Egypt to a mother who tragically fell from a bungee platform earlier this summer, the trend of posing at deadly landmarks has led to a spate of avoidable injuries and deaths.
The survivor of the Matrouh Eye incident says she has learned a difficult lesson, pledging to be far more cautious in her future travels. Her story serves as a vital reminder: no photograph is worth more than your life. When exploring the wonders of the world, it is essential to respect the boundaries of nature and stay clear of the unpredictable surf zone.
