A remarkably well-preserved copy of ‘Superman No. 1,’ originally published in 1939, achieved a record-breaking auction price this month, selling for $9.12 million. This monumental sale, which took place at a Texas auction house, has cemented the comic as the most expensive ever sold in the world, according to the auctioneers.
The Incredible Story of the Discovery
The priceless relic was discovered by three brothers while they were cleaning out the attic of their late mother’s home in San Francisco last year. The brothers, who are in their 50s and 60s, had decided to comb through their mother’s belongings for heirlooms as they prepared to put the house up for sale.
They found the vintage treasure inside a mundane cardboard box. This box was tucked away and shielded by layers of dust, cobwebs, and brittle newspapers. Alongside the Superman No. 1 issue, the box contained a handful of other rare comics that their mother and her sibling had collected just before World War II.
The mother had previously mentioned to her children that she possessed a valuable comic book collection hidden away, but they had never actually seen it until this moment.
Lon Allen, the vice president of comics at Dallas-based Heritage Auctions, described the unbelievable nature of the find, noting that the comic had been sitting exposed in an attic, where it “could have easily been thrown away, could’ve easily been destroyed in a thousand different ways”.
Appraisal and Valuation
Following the incredible discovery, the brothers reached out to the auction company. Lon Allen flew out to San Francisco earlier this year to personally inspect the Superman No. 1 issue and present it to other experts for a full appraisal.
The comic’s extraordinary value stems from a combination of its historical significance, extreme rarity, and near-mint condition.
- Historical Importance: The Superman No. 1 comic was released in 1939 by Detective Comics Inc.. The character, the Man of Steel, was the first superhero to enter pop culture, significantly boosting the issue’s value among collectors.
- Rarity: Experts were able to confirm that the copy originated from the very first edition of 500,000 copies of Superman No. 1 ever printed, thanks to a small, in-house advertisement found within the pages. Today, Lon Allen estimates that fewer than 500 copies of this issue still exist.
- Condition: Crucially, the comic was found in excellent condition. Though it received no special protection, the cool climate of Northern California played a key role in its preservation. This environment helped maintain its crisp corners, firm spine, and vibrant colors. The comics grading company, CGC, rated this specific copy an impressive 9.0 out of 10, signifying that it showed only the slightest signs of wear and aging.
Allen stated that the finding represents “every factor in collecting that you could possibly want all rolled into one,” enhanced by its improbable backstory.
Breaking Auction Records
The $9.12 million final price shattered previous records.
The preceding record for the world’s most expensive comic book was set last year (in 2024, relative to the provided 2025 news dates) when a copy of “Action Comics No. 1” sold for $6 million. Action Comics No. 1 is historically significant as the issue that first introduced the world to Superman, though Superman No. 1 was the first dedicated title for the hero. Furthermore, another copy of Superman No. 1 had previously sold for $5.3 million in 2022.
Both the buyer of the record-setting issue and the three brothers who made the discovery chose to remain anonymous, citing the massive financial windfall involved.
One of the brothers provided a poignant statement through the auction house, emphasizing that the finding was about more than just wealth: “This isn’t simply a story about old paper and ink… This was never just about a collectible. This is a testament to memory, family and the unexpected ways the past finds its way back to us.”.
